" open days should be about getting a feel for the environment, as well as looking at the educational piece"

Hate to say it, but griffin is right here. It's really important for your son to have a look around and get a sense of how things are like from accommodation to the student union. After all he'll be spending a good few years there.

For my university it was down to a choice between KCL or UCL - went for the former, partly because it meant because it'd include a year abroad but also because I just felt at ease there.

Well make sure you take him for a few beers, and don't embarrass him by being a massive Kent cunt?

Re: Exeter Uni
What is it tomorrow, Boots son, is it an open day?

I only ask because, joking aside, I did all my uni open days with MATES, and based my decision on the best piss up and availability of drugs..

Not suggesting for a second your son is that much of a clown, but open days should be about getting a feel for the environment, as well as looking at the educational piece.

The costs of attending a university in London were a major concern however if it wants to go there I'll try my best

I'm not so sure that's accurate anymore, Gavvy.
University degrees aren't necessarily viewed in the same light as when you went.

Re: Exeter Uni
sg 6.05, what has happened is that training of people has moved almost completely from companies to the state.

As you say most people did not go to uni but many of those people got jobs which came with day release, night school or block release education. Thus a company would end up with a well trained and qualified employee and not someone who has graduated today with a third in travel, catering or film studies.

Re: Exeter Uni
Leroy's, nothing wrong at all with Exeter for that, but it definitely doesn't carry the same academic clout as Imperial. Imperial has come on leaps and bounds and has a genuine worldwide reputation.

Obviously, however, much depends on what kind of experience at university he wants.

He's a bright kid to get those offers. Good luck to him whatever he decides.

Re: Exeter Uni
I chose mine based on how good a night out it was, with an eye on the quality of the department. Still, despite getting a better education at Liverpool than in my masters in Nottingham, I quickly found out that the investment banks only employed from a short list of universities, hence a year of re doing much of what I already knew so that I had a degree from a 'correct' university. Its sad but true, and mainly a result of thick and lazy HR people.

Re: Exeter Uni
You have to consider the cost of living at ICL, although it is usually in the top five of university rankings, if they matter. London is a bloody expensive place to live compared to many other counties, and lots of 18 year olds don't really appreciate the massive difference to their lives this will make. It is also a very different environment than a rural campus in many ways.

Exeter is always in the top ten, Bristol is usually around 18th/20th, below both Surrey and Southampton.

All these places are great though, and must be very exciting. Other than the logistics/expense of travelling to and fro, best idea now is to just let them choose the one they like the feel of best?
